Los Alamos Rated 2020 Healthiest Community in USA

(CNN)–  With its vast mountain ranges, diverse wildlife and clean air, Los Alamos County, New Mexico, has been ranked the healthiest community of 2020.Located about 40 miles from Santa Fe, the county is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which developed the first atomic bombs during World War II. The county received a perfect score for measurements including drinking water quality, affordable housing availability, park access and population with an advanced degree, according to the annual U.S. News Healthiest Communities rankings report.

Enterprise Bank & Trust Foundation Fulfills First Of Three-Year Commitment To Los Alamos Community Foundation

(LACF News)–  Enterprise Bank & Trust recently provided the Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF) with a $50,000 check from the Enterprise Endowment Fund matching gift campaign.

Enterprise pledged a total commitment of up to $150,000 – $50,000 per year for three years – to the LACF that will contribute resources directly to the needs of the Los Alamos community.

“On behalf of everyone at LACF, we thank Enterprise Bank & Trust for making this commitment that will benefit our local nonprofits for years to come,” LACF President David Izraelevitz said. “We are grateful to the many community members who have contributed to this fund to help us receive the full $50,000 match from Enterprise. This is truly a community-wide partnership, which LACF is honored to be a part of.”

In 2019, Enterprise made a collective investment of nearly a half million dollars to seven New Mexico nonprofit organizations through the Enterprise Bank & Trust Foundation. This commitment provides resources directly to the Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque communities over three years. These contributions will provide for the building of new or expanded facilities, enhanced programming and access to additional resources for the New Mexico communities.

2020-2021 Nonprofit Training Program

2020-2021 Nonprofit Training Program

During our 2020-2021 session, LACF and United Way of Northern New Mexico are partnering to offer local nonprofits three in-depth training workshops designed to build organizational capacity in the wake of the pandemic.  Each workshop will be held virtually and will be approximately three hours long (including discussion, breakout sessions and breaks).   Nonprofits are encouraged to send 2-3 participants to each workshop, including senior staff and/or board members.  Tickets are $50 per organization per workshop.  A discounted package deal is available which includes access to all three sessions for $100.   Nonprofits will leave each workshop with an immediately usable, measurable action plan.  Included in the ticket price is access to a follow up session which will be held 4-6 weeks after the workshop, designed to keep each organization on track to accomplish its plan.  Workshops will be facilitated by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence.

The success of any organization begins with a strong board. And successfully navigating your organization’s mission in a post-pandemic era begins with a strong plan. This workshop will offer key lessons of what constitutes a high-functioning, impactful board, including use of an assessment tool to provide a baseline understanding of where your organization is today. It then dives into strategic planning to help guide your organization to where it wants to go. Additionally, key fundamentals will be addressed such as review of mission and vision, the relationship between board and executive director, and the duty of care. 

Paul and Susan Bombardt Establish K-12 Music Education Endowment for Los Alamos Public Schools

Los Alamos, N.M. – The Los Alamos Community Foundation announces the establishment of the Paul and Susan Bombardt K-12 Music Education Endowment for Los Alamos Public Schools. The fund will benefit students in music education in Los Alamos by providing funding for performing artists to give demonstrations, classes, or workshops that will expose, engage, and excite students (K–12). The fund will also support teachers in their efforts to attract and retain music students throughout their education and provide student access to musical instrument (rental) where needed. 

Paul and Susan were fortunate to experience music in their early education and were inspired by their music teachers. Paul studied the violin and enjoyed playing in both school and community orchestras. Susan studied piano, clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxophone and played in concert, stage and marching bands. She also sang in her school chorus and church choir. 

“Although Susan and I pursued careers in science, we understood how we benefited from our music education in numerous ways,” said Bombardt. “We believe music added another perspective to our scientific and technical careers.” 

The Bombardt’s hope is that through this endowment fund, music educators in LAPS will be able to further excite, engage and retain students in the musical arts so that they in turn will similarly benefit from life enriching and inspiring experiences.

“Our music education taught us teamwork and to appreciate music of all varieties and provided us an avenue for making new and lifelong friends,” said Bombardt.

In addition to their initial gift, the Bombardts have made a provision in their estate that will direct a substantial gift to their endowment after lifetime. “It’s our desire to leave this type of legacy for Los Alamos and have our fund continue to grow with an after-lifetime contribution,” said Susan Bombardt.

The Bombardt endowment fund is administered by the LACF and the distributions will be administered through the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation.

“The Los Alamos Community Foundation is grateful to Paul and Sue for entrusting us with the opportunity to bring their philanthropic vision to life through the creation of this fund,” said Rachel Kizielewicz, LACF Executive Director.

Final Round of COVID-19 Grant Recipients Announced

Los Alamos, N.M. – The COVID-19 Emergency Response Grant, a collaborative effort between the Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF), community partners and generous donors, announced today the final grant recipients. Nearly $31,000 were distributed to 20 organizations to aid in emergency response and assistance.

The nonprofits receiving funding in this final round include:

3HO Foundation of NM, American Red Cross, Cancer Foundation NM, Dream Tree Project, El Rito Art Association, Embudo Valley Library and Community Center, Espanola Humane Society, Espanola Pathways Shelter, Family Strengths Network, Food Depot, HELP-NM, INSIDE OUT, Los Alamos Arts Council, Los Alamos Historical Society, Luciente, McCurdy Schools, San Gabriel Historical Society, San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen, Self Help and the Truchas Library and Service Center.

“This final round of grants from the Fund is assisting organizations that are addressing basic human needs and other critical supports to residents in northern New Mexico,” said Jenny Parks, President and CEO of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation, one of the funding partners with this emergency response effort. “These nonprofits are aiding in food distribution, providing mental health assistance, ensuring access to broadband and educational resources, and generally are trying to meet the myriad of needs that their constituents are facing.”  

Rachel Kizielewicz, Executive Director of the Los Alamos Community Foundation, added that grants from the Fund have gone to provide general support to organizations that may not be on the front lines, but who are important to the fabric of our communities, and whose income has suffered as a result of the pandemic. “We want to see all of our community’s organizations pull through this tough time,” said Kizielewicz.

Between the two rounds of grants, a total of $60,270 from the Fund was distributed to benefit 37 community serving nonprofits. Grants made in the first round are detailed at www.losalamoscf.org. All of the contributions that have been made to the emergency response funds have been expended in full. Funding partners wish to thank the many community members and organizations that came together to make these resources available to our local nonprofits during this time of need. 

About the Nonprofit Emergency Response Funds

The LACF, in collaboration with Con Alma Health Foundation, Delle Foundation, LANL Foundation, LANL/Triad National Security LLC, Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B), and United Way of Northern New Mexico, started the Nonprofit Emergency Response Funds, as a hub for accepting donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses and distributing 100% of those funds rapidly to nonprofits, with priority to those on the front lines of COVID-19 response. Since Los Alamos County is not in the service area of any other community foundation in New Mexico, two funds were created:

The Nonprofit Emergency Response Fund – Los Alamos collected funds prioritized toward nonprofits situated in and serving Los Alamos County.

The Nonprofit Emergency Response Fund – Greatest Need collected funds prioritized toward the greatest need of nonprofits situated in Rio Arriba and Los Alamos Counties.

LACF Announces Round I COVID-19 Emergency Response Grant Recipients

Los Alamos, N.M. – The Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF), in collaboration with generous donors and community partners, announced $29,300 of Emergency Response grants to 20 regional nonprofits severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nonprofits receiving funding in this initial round include:

Barrios Unidos, Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region, Breath of My Heart Birthplace, Coro de Camara, Española YMCA Teen Center, Española Valley Fiber Arts Center, Family Learning Center, Habitat for Humanity of Española Valley & Los Alamos, INSIDE OUT, Las Cumbres Community Services, Los Alamos Makers, Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service, Luciente, Moving Arts Española, Northern Youth Project, Self Help, Ponderosa Montessori School, Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program, SuperHealth and The Family YMCA.

“We recognize that each day brings new hardships for our area nonprofits, many of which are serving our most vulnerable residents,” LACF Executive Director Rachel Kizielewicz said. “LACF and our funding partners are ready to do more in the coming weeks.”

“This is an exceptionally challenging time for our nonprofits, especially those that are suddenly facing increased demand for their services because they support basic needs addressing social determinants of health,” said Executive Director Cindy Padilla of the United Way of Northern New Mexico. “This Emergency Response Fund provides an option for donors who want to support our region’s greatest needs but aren’t sure where to direct their funding.

Nonprofit Emergency Response Funds Announced

Los Alamos, N.M. – The Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF) has established the Nonprofit Emergency Response Funds, in partnership with a growing list of local businesses and foundations, to support and assist nonprofit organizations in Northern New Mexico as they respond to the impact of COVID-19 within our communities.

Initial partners who have committed to seeding the funds include: Delle Foundation, LACF, LANL Foundation, Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B), Triad National Security LLC, and United Way of Northern New Mexico. These partners have committed an initial round of funding, will provide assistance with administering the funds, and anticipate continuing to help grow the fund in the weeks and months ahead. Public contributions to the funds are welcome, and can be made online or by check.

Two funds have been established:

The Nonprofit Emergency Response Fund – Los Alamos will collect funds prioritized toward nonprofits situated in and serving Los Alamos County.

The Nonprofit Emergency Response Fund – Greatest Need will collect funds prioritized toward the greatest need of nonprofits situated in Rio Arriba and Los Alamos Counties.

The LACF Pledge Regarding COVID-19 Emergency

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has created a global health and economic crisis that is testing every one of us. We know that the shocks of this “new normal” are severe and unanticipated for our nonprofit sector and grantee partners.

Through the Council on Foundations, the Los Alamos Community Foundation has joined with hundreds of leaders in philanthropy, to recognize the critical need to act with fierce urgency to support our nonprofit partners as well as the people and communities hit hardest by the impacts of COVID-19.

OUR PLEDGE

Over the days, weeks, and months ahead, each of our foundations pledges to:

  • Loosen or eliminate the restrictions on current grants. This can include: converting project-based grants to unrestricted support; accelerating payment schedules; and not holding grantees responsible if conferences, events, and other project deliverables must be postponed or canceled.
  • Make new grants as unrestricted as possible, so nonprofit partners have maximum flexibility to respond to this crisis. We will also support organizations created and led by the communities most affected that we may not fund currently.
  • Reduce what we ask of our nonprofit partners, postponing reporting requirements, site visits, and other demands on their time during this challenging period.
  • Contribute to community-based emergency response funds and other efforts to address the health and economic impact on those most affected by this pandemic.
  • Communicate proactively and regularly about our decision-making and response to provide helpful information while not asking more of grantee partners.
  • Commit to listening to our partners and especially to those communities least heard, lifting up their voices and experiences to inform public discourse and our own decision-making so we can act on their feedback. We recognize that the best solutions to the manifold crises caused by COVID-19 are not found within foundations.
  • Support, as appropriate, grantee partners advocating for important public policy changes to fight the pandemic and deliver an equitable and just emergency response for all. This may include its economic impact on workers, such as expanded paid sick leave; increasing civic participation; access to affordable health care; and expanded income and rental assistance. It should also include lending our voices to calls to action led by grantee partners, at their direction and request.
  • Learn from these emergency practices and share what they teach us about effective partnership and philanthropic support, so we may consider adjusting our practices more fundamentally in the future, in more stable times, based on all we learn.
