What is the difference between a MOU, MOA, and contract? How to choose? How are agreements structured? What should an agreement contain? Presenters from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos Public Schools and Los Alamos County will discuss collaborative partnerships. There will also be opportunities to network and discover new common areas for collaboration with peer organizations. Our theme this year will be on the topic of Board Development.  This session will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at UNM-LA (Lecture hall, room 230, building 2) from 8:30am – 1:00pm, and will include breakfast and lunch.

Description:

Could your organization use help clarifying and enhancing the role of your Board of Directors? Join us to learn key board responsibilities, expectations, and best practices, with a focus on financial oversight.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the governance and financial management responsibilities of board members.
  • Identify legally required and recommended standard practices for nonprofit Boards of Directors.
  • Create a board development action plan using the New Mexico Nonprofit Principles and Practices Companion Workbook.
  • Review board recruitment and development resources available in New Mexico.

Your Board of Directors is responsible for providing overall leadership and strategic direction for the organization. This workshop will help board members and executive directors get a clear perspective on what that looks like in practice. The workshop will begin with an overview of the governance and financial management responsibilities of board members, including legal requirements and recommended standard practices. The second half of the workshop will have nonprofits creating an action plan to identify, prioritize, and achieve your board development goals.  Using the New Mexico Nonprofit Principles & Practices Guide as a learning tool, workshop participants will think through specific topics such as board member giving requirements, board orientation, board chair responsibilities and policy and accountability. 

The Los Alamos Community Foundation will provide attendees with their own copy of the New Mexico Nonprofit Principles & Practices Guide and companion workbook ($50 value)One per organization.

LACF 2018 Year in Review

Funds:

  • Total number of endowed funds increased from two to five
  • Total types of funds increased from two (internal and agency) to four (donor designated and field of interest); and the first donor advised fund is on the near horizon
  • Donor portals were added for fund holders through new Foundant database, providing access to fund financial data in real time
  • A total of $131,198 was received in contributions (including endowed and non-endowed gifts) to benefit the community of Los Alamos

Finance:

  • Converted to new software system (Foundant’s CommunitySuite) which streamlines financial tracking and reporting
  • Conducted full internal audit, and formalized internal controls
  • Added additional members to Finance and Investment Committee, to round out the expertise on this advisory group       

Nonprofit Events and Communications:

  • Held bi-monthly Executive Director Roundtable events
  • Held seven nonprofit training sessions, including annual conference (April), joint event with LANB (November), and social entrepreneurship workshop (November) 
  • Sent monthly and quarterly email updates to LACF constituencies regarding opportunities for training, idea-sharing and networking

The Guide, and corresponding Companion Workbook, were created with support from a fifty-member Advisory Committee and have been designed to help nonprofit organizations determine specific practices to implement in order to strengthen governance and operations at their organization.

During this information session you will learn:

  • How to navigate the Guide and pinpoint best practices in nonprofit management
  • How to use the Companion Workbook to prioritize practices to implement
  • How to build organizational capacity using related support services

The speaker for this event will be Larry Alei. Larry is the Director of The Center for Nonprofit Excellence and is a proud Los Alamos Hilltopper, class of ’79.

Emily is the Manager of McGay Consulting, LLC, a small local consulting firm that works with non-profit organizations on their operations, strategic planning, and board development. Emily also conducts studies such as community needs assessments and feasibility studies for capital development. Emily looks forward to bringing her decades of leadership experience to our nonprofit community to aid in your fundraising efforts.

Non-profits generally raise funds for three purposes, 1) annual support; 2) capital; and 3) endowment. Annual support is very important because you must prove you are a publicly supported organization to the IRS in order to maintain your 501(c)3 status. The current thinking is that one-third of your income should come from contributed dollars. This is a big responsibility. So how do you become successful at asking people for money?

Proven strategies can be learned and implemented that will ensure your success:

  • Set up a campaign committee of staff and volunteers
  • Develop a plan and document the need and the case to include a firm monetary goal
  • Cultivate your potential donors. Visit with them face-to-face to show your enthusiasm for the cause
  • Recruit, train and motivate your volunteers on how to be more successful with their asks
  • Monitor your campaign with report meetings
  • Evaluate your campaign for improvements that can be made the next time.

Los Alamos Community Foundation Hires First Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Los Alamos Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Rachel Kizielewicz has joined the Foundation as its first Executive Director. Rachel has more than fifteen years of experience in fundraising and philanthropy in the nonprofit sector. She served as the Director of Constituent Relations with the University of Pittsburgh and was a key fundraising staff member for the university’s $2 billion capital campaign. Rachel was instrumental in establishing strong relationships between the university and its constituents, helping to increase the donor base and strengthen ties to the community.

Throughout her career, she has helped nonprofit organizations of all sizes develop targeted fundraising strategies and robust donor outreach programs. Rachel obtained a Master’s Degree in Philanthropic Studies from Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Embezzlement and fraud within the nonprofit sector is probably more common and also more preventable than you would think.  The damage and effect of fraud can be extensive and community trust hard to regain.  By raising your awareness of how it happens and implementing a few simple methods your nonprofit can avoid such a calamity!

In this interactive presentation you will learn about:

  • Common ways that embezzlement and or fraud can occur.
  • The critical areas where controls are most needed.
  • Effective ways to establish internal controls with a limited staff.
  • Specific controls that can be applied immediately with minimal effort.
  • Examples where controls could have prevented fraud or errors.
